Dryer vent cleaning is essential for home and apartment owners, clogged dryer vents result in almost 13,000 structure fires across the US annually. There are also thousands of homes treated for poisonous gas fumes due to blocked dryer vent ducts. This can be easily prevented. Here are a few warning signs to look out for:
–clothes take longer to dry or don’t fully dry in a cycle
–items are hotter than normal when you get them from the dryer
–the outside exhaust flapper doesn’t open very much indicating low air velocity from the dryer
–laundry area becomes more humid while dryer is running
–laundry area becomes hotter while dryer is running
–there is a burnt smell around your dryer
Cleaning your lint trap every time you use your dryer is the first step to preventing lint buildup in your dryer vent. You can also use your vacuum and skinny hose attachment to clean out the lint trap housing on your dryer itself. Special brushes can be purchased to reach deeper into the trap but always be careful not to damage internal components. Unplug your dryer and disconnect the flexible transitional duct work from your dryer into the main vent and use attachments or the specialized brushes to clean the inside of the tubing. Because plastic or vinyl transitional flexible tubing is more susceptible to catching fire, replace it with semi-rigid metal transitional duct work for an added precaution.
